When Galaxy Theatres agreed to be part of Atascadero’s Colony Square, developer Jim Harrison snagged more than a film company. Check out this video of what Galaxy did for Gig Harbor, Wash. No wonder Atascadero is starry eyed over the possibilities. A contingent of Atascadero civic leaders is road tripping to a Galaxy site in Tulare next week to see the operation firsthand …

No 28, Linda Somers Smith of Duggan Smith & Heath

Attorney Linda Somers Smith (Duggan Smith & Heath) continues to prove she’s fabulous at more than the law. The longtime runner, who will be 49 soon, tackled the LA Marathon and took first for age 40 and over; sixth place among all women who raced (the first five are in their 20’s) and eighteenth overall among the 20,000 racers. Linda’s performance qualified her for the Olympic Trials for the record seventh time.

GOOD WORKS

March 25th, 2010

San Luis Obispo Symphony is calling concert goers to bring non-perishable food and cash donations to the Symphony’s March performances to support the Food Bank of San Luis Obispo County. Every dollar translates to seven meals. Talk about making a harmonic difference … The preceding item creates a smooth transition for this one: Hunger Awareness Day, a cause near and dear to BCA’s heart, is coming up this year on Thursday, June 3. Please send an e-mail to let us know you’d like to help … A name to note and a guy to get to know: Jonathan York heads the Entrepreneurship program at Cal Poly and has a team of students on the move creating an Entrepreneurship Club. Good things to follow … Speaking of entrepreneurship, how’s this for the Central Coast at its best: Tireless North County volunteer Susan Jones (Midland Pacific Homes) told us about Teens at Work, a program that takes at-risk middle school age kids and train them in every aspect of business operation. The Teens make products to sell, including a fun line of Scrabble-tile jewelry, baked goods and greeting cards, and they’re paid for their work. Find out more.

Steve Newell set a gold standard in proclaiming support for Canada

Randy Flamm and his team at IQMS had a big week recently. The Paso Robles software design company hosted a visit from Congressman Kevin McCarthy, then Randy talked (business) turkey as a panel member at the 2010 Central Coast Business Symposium hosted by Andre, Morris & Buttery and co-sponsored by BCA … Speaking of the symposium, entrepreneurship expert Jon York of Cal Poly’s Orfalea College of Business dished up a lively session in conversation with Randy, Ty Safreno (Trust Automation) and Steve Newell (Windset Farms). High marks all around. Favorite anecdote: Steve’s tale of Santa Maria Mayor Larry Lavagnino good naturedly palming a bat and asking what it would take to land the Windset greenhouse in Santa Maria instead of Camarillo. Decision Santa Maria. Favorite visual: Vancouver resident Steve’s wardrobe choice.
