SEEN & HEARD

September 23rd, 2010

It’s not often we use our own blog to promote politics, but the disaster that is Measure H must be stopped. We oppose this crazy plan and we’re happy to be joined by literally hundreds of community, public safety, sports, neighborhood and other leaders. It’s confusing – just remember this: you must Vote NO if you want to finish Prado Road. And boy, do we. Can you help by posting a yard sign in SLO (commercial or residential)? Visit the website and send in an e-mail, please … Two tops worth celebrating: Galaxy Theatres’ ten-screen techno-fab movie palace is well under way in Atascadero’s Colony Square, slated to open in March of 2011. A flag was raised at a recent topping-off ceremony heralding the forward progress. And the literal icing on the cake was provided by Atascadero’s own Cassie’s Specialty Cakes, who dazzled with an array of cupcakes sporting the Galaxy logo … It’s been five months in the making, and now the dazzlingly all-new, yes-you-can-even-print tickets website for the Performing Arts Center has gone live. The PAC revamped its site to move patrons online for event information, and the new product really moves. Hats off to the BCA-PAC team who made things happen: from BCA, web wonderguy Isaac Horton and detail diva Teri Conklin; and from the PAC, Melody Klemin, Nancy Cochran and Ron Regier. FPAC’s Cory Karpin was at the table, too. Let’s just say this gang makes beautiful music together – online and off. Bravo! … And the PAC news doesn’t stop there. On Saturday, immerse yourself in local music and performances at the second annual BRAVO SLO! from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the beautiful Performing Arts Center – all for free. Drink a little wine and win door prizes in between shows. Melody Klemin has been working tirelessly to promote the event. Check out what she did for LAST year’s BRAVO SLO! Ah, creativity abounds at the PAC.

LOCAL BEAT

September 23rd, 2010

Get ready for something wonderful from the creative owners of Novo and Robin’s. Luna Red is heading for Downtown SLO in October, taking over the space formerly occupied by Chow on Monterey Street next to the Fremont Theatre. While we wait for opening day, whet your appetite with thoughts of what’s to come: food that’s local, local, local featuring globally inspired entrees, tapas and small plates. With the Novo/Robin’s duo at the helm, you know every bite will be an art form. Frankly, we can’t wait to see red … Computer pro Geoff Lillich has sold his company, Sentinel Systems, to TekTegrity, but call it a classic win-win: the Lillich lifeline (a two-man effort of Geoff and his associate, Nic Orrben) hasn’t changed. Find Geoff and Nic both on the job at TekTegrity, where Geoff is stepping up to sophisticated system design and Nic covers support services. CEO Russ Levanway and COO Jeremy Koellish are the co-founders of the growing TekTegrity … Crack the code: Want to find out how to get some business from the General Services Administration? Mission Community Services is offering a free seminar Tuesday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. Space is limited; pre-registration required. Visit www.theftc.org or call (866) 382-7822 … Kevin Myers, president of Specialty Silicone Fabricators, has just returned from a trip to visit his clients (not vendors) in China. Interesting reading in this month’s EVC newsletter … Save the Dates: The Human Resources Association of the Central Coast’s Annual Professional Development Conference is slated for Oct. 21 at the Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Nationally recognized speakers. Info and registration at www.HRACC.net … And the annual “what the heck can we expect” Central Coast Economic Forecast (previously UCSB) event is getting ready to rock and rumble on Nov. 5 in San Luis Obispo. Registration flyers headed your way.

GOOD WORKS

September 23rd, 2010

Kudos to Cancer Connections of SLO County on its fifth birthday. Founded by Elaine Gardiner to help cancer patients, families and caregivers talk to “someone who has been there,” the all-volunteer group has helped hundreds of residents. Call (805) 235-2997 or visit www.cancerconnectionsslo.org for more information … More good works with great dividends: Women for Community boosted the Senior Nutrition Program of SLO County by $20,000, proceeds from the 7th Annual Hit & Giggle Golf Tournament … and Leadership SLO Class 19 is walking the talk, volunteering weekends to build a child-safe playground and outdoor classroom for the deserving kids of the SLO Child Development Center. The project is the group’s legacy gift to the community.
