Jim Henderson extiguishes the candle for the 413th Infantry and salutes all those present and past.

We’ve talked in the past about Maggie Cox’s amazing dad, Jim Henderson. There’s too much to tell about him in a little FYI piece, but we can offer this tidbit. The Henderson-Cox family was honored to be in attendance in Chicago as Jim’s WWII Army Infantry Division celebrated its 65th and final annual reunion. Unbelievable, powerful and humbling don’t begin to describe it. Luckily for us, the pros of the Chicago Sun Times were on site to capture the very moving Memorial Service. The photo gallery alone showcases the power of what these heroes did for us. And history buffs note: The 104th’s current general, Brigadier General Daniel Lee York, is the grandson of Sgt York.

Our condolences to Suzy and Bob McDonald on the recent passing of Bob’s mother, Betty. Betty was a spirited art lover, a gentle soul and a woman known and loved far and wide. She lived a long life but we know it is never easy to say goodbye.

BCA SOCIAL

September 9th, 2010

In real estate, the three most important words are location, location, location. The same can be said about social media’s exploding location-based apps like Foursquare, Gowalla and now Facebook. Brands are clamoring to connect with mobile consumers while they’re out and about, hoping to cash in while they’re in the mood to buy. It takes impulse buying to an entirely new level. Learn what 5 things advertisers need to know about location-based media. Feel free to give me a call to chat about it. You know where I’ll be located – right here at BCA, the county’s social media headquarters.

Scott Morrell is a social media guru at Barnett Cox & Associates and is always on the go. Catch him at 788-4432, @MorellScott on Twitter or smorrell@barnettcox.com.

SEEN & HEARD

September 9th, 2010

We love to play in the fun zone, and that’s exactly where we are working with Cal Poly on its significant construction project, the new Center for Science. Dubbed “Area 52” to capture a sci-fi pun (it’s Building 52) and wrap it in marketing wizardry, the campaign targets campus goers, outlining the many ways to peacefully co-exist with university operations. You’ll see how it all comes together at area52.calpoly.edu (launch date: 9/13/10) … Among other clever moves made by the very clever Steve Martin of Atascadero Main Street is the creation of an internet radio station, “the New Oldies,” streaming the classics at www.thenewoldies.com … People in the news: Andrea Wasko is back at Mission Community Services Corporation. With a background that includes medical device marketing, research & development and manufacturing, along with a foray into gourmet foods manufacturing, Andrea “walks the talk” for new and expanding businesses needing advice.  595-1357 or e-mail info@mcscorp.org … The ever-fab Barbara George has agreed to help out Cuesta interim Prez Gil Stork and steer the Cuesta Foundation during a search for a permanent fundraiser. June Stevens, former Cuesta Foundation director, has relocated to Citrus College in Azusa … SLO architect Craig Smith has just finished helping the SLO Church of the Nazarene remodel the church’s sanctuary, a labor of love which he supported with a generous donation of time.

Joe Whitaker and Ron Yukelson talk cars - Hot Wheel Cars.

Before SCORE volunteer Joe Whitaker retired, he was a marketing pro with Mattel Toys (where he met and worked with the late Tom Martin. There’s a whole side story to all of that, but that’s not today’s focus.) Today we’re talking about Joe’s smokin’ claim to fame as the original brand manager / marketing whiz for Mattel Toy’s Hot Wheels (launched in 1968). Enter Ron Yukelson, business development director at Sierra Vista and a guy who nabbed his brother’s original collection of Hot Wheels when said brother lost interest. Ron has lovingly cared for the collection all these years, and, when he learned that Car Guy Joe lived locally, just had to talk toys. As might be expected, Ron found Joe and lunch, car stories and marketing tales followed. And you thought Barbie’s 50th was big … In speaking of the good people of SCORE, they are hosting a workshop to help jump-start business plans. One-on-one counseling and other benefits for attendees on Sept. 21 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. No charge. 547-0779 … The Central Coast Women’s Network is sponsoring a “How I Did It” forum on Thursday, Sept. 23, featuring a panel of local successful women, including two special BCA pals: Susan Mullen of Pacific Energy and Hillary Trout of Longcrier Associates. The program runs 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Steynberg Gallery on Monterey in SLO … The Human Resources Association of the Central Coast hosts its Annual Professional Development Conference on Oct. 21 at SLO Embassy Suites. With a theme of “Rebounding in Today’s Economic Times,” interest is sure to be strong. Sign up at www.HRACC.net.
