Much ballyhoo about the fab Galaxy Theatres grand opening last week — Galaxy led all county theatres in attendance its opening weekend (and the commercial center is now 80-percent leased). As part of the VIP ceremonies opening the theatres, local manager Rita Carr announced that Galaxy will honor the civic spirit and community service of the late Joanne Main, Atascadero Chamber president and CEO who died suddenly in February, with the creation of a Galaxy employee service award. The Main family was present for the announcement … The Central Coast Business Symposium hosted by Andre, Morris & Buttery is coming up April 7, 3-7 p.m. at the Clark Center. The stellar speaker line up includes new Poly prez Jeffrey Armstrong, Banking guru Carroll Pruett, Yahoo! Chief Technology Officer Blake Irving and LA Dodgers biz whiz Michael Young. This event is not to be missed for many reasons … Larry Werner of North Coast Engineering in Paso sent along this tidbit that is just plain fun. Call it The Apprentice on Wheels meets the Shark Tank TV show with some speed dating concepts thrown in. Larry’s son Nic is finishing an MBA from USF while working for Vast. Nic’s coworker at Vast cooked up an idea to load a bus with entrepreneurs headed from SF to Austin to attend the South By Southwest tech conference. The bus gangs have 48 hours to form teams and create a product prototype before hitting Austin.  Once in town, entries are voted on by a panel, and some will get VC funding. This year there are six buses, originating in cities like SF to NY, all going to Austin. Track their progress … Calling all moms – Idler’s 27th Annual Mom & Apple Pie Contest begins with a preliminary round this Saturday at the San Luis Obispo Idler’s location. Dust off your favorite apple pie recipe and rolling pin for a chance to win the grand prize of a KitchenAid Stainless Steel Pro-Series Range.
