BCA SOCIAL

May 26th, 2011

It’s one thing for us to sit here at the top of each BCA FYI and talk about social media, share links about social media and say you should do social media. It was time for BCA to play with social media and invite you to come along. The result: Caboodle. This scavenger hunt uses your smartphone and Foursquare to let you check in at our incredible partner caboodling businesses. Each check in gets you entered to win prizes, like an iPad from MacSuperstore or a private wine tasting at Pomar Junction. Play with us now through June 7. Start here. And at the end of the fun, we’ll share what we learn about SLO County social media knowledge.

SEEN & HEARD

May 26th, 2011

Big happenings at the SLO Botanical Gardens. New Executive Director Mike Bush has relocated from Singapore to lead the Garden, while passionate volunteer (and retired exec director herself) Liz Scott Graham was part of a powerhouse effort that snagged a $319,000 County grant to finish some amazing projects at the site. Be ready to see it unveiled before year end … Wonder what pieces fit where on the SLO Target project? The building going up in front is an AT&T store; Olive Garden will be on the corner of Froom Ranch Rd and LOVR, and our own locally owned MacSuperstore will be located next to Target … Gastroenterologist Dr. Vance Rodgers probably knows a thing or two about healthy eating. And since he and wife Virginia grow olives on their property, it only makes sense that they are bottling their own…what else…olive oil. “Obispo Olive” pairs beautifully with a balsamic vinegar the Rodgers’ import from Modena, Italy.

LOCAL BEAT

May 26th, 2011

The Central Coast Cancer Challenge is determined to make inroads to beating this wicked disease. Sign up and start training for the walk, run and bike events coming up later this summer. Kick Off Rally is June 4, 9-11:30 a.m. at Sierra Vista  … The Bob Jones Trail just gets better and better. This Friday at 11 a.m. the newest piece – a quarter-mile section in the heart of Avila Beach (San Miguel Street to First Street) – will be feted with a ribbon cutting.
A year goes by quickly, and in the case of our county’s needy, it means more people looking for the great help of the Food Bank Coalition. Hunger Awareness Day is Friday, June 3. There are a zillion ways to help. Please do … Saturday, June 4 the SLO Wine and Grill Affair benefits Transitions Mental Health Association; enjoy grill and grape mastery with some of the county’s leading chefs and vintners. Perbacco Cellars at the historic Filliponi Ranch … June 6 marks the 25th anniversary of the iconic Embarcadero Inn in Morro Bay. Owned by the Biaggini family, you gotta love the sign that still stands on the property: “Built by Ed Biaggini III and Father.” Ed III passed away suddenly with a heart attack two years ago, but “Father” Harold is still hard at work. Lots of festivities planned to celebrate the quarter-century mark.

GOOD WORKS

May 26th, 2011

Hats off to the Young Professionals Networking Group. Their Monte Carlo Night fundraiser benefitting the SLO Children’s Museum was the group’s biggest success – attendance and net proceeds ($5,800!) – ever.
