Remarkable Bookmarkables
It’s happened to all of us. Technology and the internet throw wrenches in the ease of our work days. You want to print out a website, but instead you print 5 sheets of almost-blank paper. Your only copy of a logo comes out a blurry mess when you drop it into a Word doc. These handy web apps are geared to solve those pesky tech problems in a snap. Try ‘em out before you bang your head on your keyboard. They’re certainly bookmarkable.

SEEN & HEARD

June 23rd, 2011

Nice week for local businesses in travel media. AAA’s Via magazine has a two-page story (with photos by Chris Leschinsky) on Cambria. And in Sunset magazine, two North Coast faves made the cut on a search for the “Best Road Trip Food in the West” – Linn’s in Cambria for olallieberry pie and Ruddell’s Smokehouse in Cayucos for fish tacos … She is cleaning up. You remember Martha VanInwegen, intrepid inventor and marketer of Action Wipes, an oversized cleaning cloth much admired by athletes, campers and other hearty outdoors types. Well, Martha’s product has scored its first national consumer magazine mention: Action Wipes are lauded in a July Woman’s Day article on camping must-haves. And Action Wipes is also listed on the Burning Man website as a resource for event attendees … The fine folks at Atascadero Galaxy Theatres not only provided a venue for the recent Central Coast Economic Forecast “Mid-Year Update,” they created a little economic stimulus themselves, gifting every attendee with a pass for two to return to the movies. Cuesta College prez Gil Stork did a great job MC’ing the event that included presentations by Dave Mullinax of the League of California Cities, CalChamber CEO Allan Zaremberg and Beacon Economics’ Chris Thornberg.

Hot-hot-hot was the order of the day at Idler’s Appliances first-ever Father’s Day Chili Cookoff. Chili chefs from all over SLO County came out to compete. Travis Soule scored the top dog position in SLO and Toby Williams took it in Paso Robles. And while those chili recipes may be closely guarded, it’s no secret that Idler’s knows how to cook up community spirit and have some fun … If you are looking for 4th of July festivities, check out Morro Bay for its Sunday skateboard race attempting to break a world record, Sunday-Monday fun in Tidelands Park (games, food, music) and a Monday extravaganza that begins with a bike parade (several hundred pedalers) and ends with fireworks over the Bay at 9:15 p.m. … Still looking for something fun for the weekend? This weekend’s Roll Out the Barrels and the International Choral Festival are two more reasons why SLO is the Happiest City in the U.S. Check them out … Very soon you’ll be able to buy Olde Port Inn’s fresh fish without a trip to Avila – another location is opening at the corner of Olive and Santa Rosa in SLO … Added benefit to the July 1st Art after Dark event in Downtown SLO: the much admired Robert Reynolds will be discussing his work on site at the SLO Museum of Art on Broad Street, 6-9 pm. Bargains galore in Paso this Saturday with what’s billed as the North County’s Largest Yard Sale. Even kids have a shot at their own flea market. Downtown City Park; sponsored by the Paso Robles Main Street Association … Tomorrow, noon-1 p.m. the Arroyo Grande Chamber of Commerce is hosting a training session to help participants get the most of out of Microsoft Office. One lucky winner will walk away with a complete Office package. Lyle Thomas of Computer-Techs is manning the mouse. 489-1488.

BRAGGING RIGHTS

June 23rd, 2011

Two women making a difference: Longcrier & Associates‘ very own Hillary Trout was a recipient of the 2011 “Women to Watch” award from the California State Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA). From her work as a CPA to leading SOFTEC to volunteering for any number of local causes and oh yeah, being mom to a teenager, Hillary is indeed one to watch … And the indefatigable Jean St. Martin is a mom of two young children, a principal for the Andre, Morris & Buttery law firm, incoming secretary for the Rotary Club of Paso Robles and in her second term as president of the 2011 Paso Robles Children’s Museum. Nobody but Jean was surprised when she was named recipient of the Museum’s Community Service Award, presented to her on Tom Martin Day at the Museum in June. According to the late Tom Martin’s daughter, Laura Sherlock, St. Martin was an easy pick for the award named in honor of Tom’s community commitment.
