A happy surprise for BCA staffer Shabree Wenz and family: Shabree’s sister Chantelle, a member of the U.S. Air Force, popped in for an unexpected weekend visit –the first time Shabree has seen her in a year. New research portrays the UK as a smartphone-addicted country. In the study, 23% of adults and 34% of teens have used their smartphones during mealtimes, and 23% of teenagers claim to watch less TV and 15% admit they read fewer books as a result of their smartphone use. We imagine the U.S. not being far behind. What did researchers find? Check these stats out. (And if you see yourself in them, don’t fret. Ours are sitting on our desks too.)

California’s Office of Tourism recently took advantage of the Royals’ visit to California by running $2.6M in a TV campaign that used an engaging “three days’ isn’t enough” focus, with both Morro Rock and Hearst Castle enjoying prominence … What recession? Ray’s Own Brand sausage is expanding in the Central Valley, has recently signed with national food distribution giant McLane (serving more than 54,000 locations), and is on the menu in restaurants in SF, Isla Vista and Costa Mesa. Owners Nina-Marie and Ray Cattaneo have added four new employees to their Edna Valley operation to keep up with demand … The Foundation for the Performing Arts Center finds its ideal new executive director in New Hampshire, where Heather Cochrane was serving as director of development and alumni relations at one of the East Coast’s most respected boarding high schools. Her prestigious success there, along with a great-fit-for-the-Central-Coast personality and skill set won her the post recently vacated by Cory Karpin, who now leads Woods Humane Society. Organizational guru Sandi Sigurdson helped oversee the exec search and steer FPACinthe interim … Turn to page 91 of local author Earlene Fowler’s sixteenth mystery novel, Spider Web, and enjoy a cameo of one of SLO’s own, longtime Chamber staffer Cyndi Silva. Cyndi struck up an email friendship with Earlene, who sets her stories in and around San Luis Obispo, and Earlene returned the favor with a nice shout out, a portion of which we share: “Cyndi Silva is amazing. No one knows this county better than she does. She and I went to Cal Poly together.”
