SEEN & HEARD

September 29th, 2011

Groundbreaking news – literally. It’s been 13 years since San Luis Obispo has seen a new housing development take shape. So when MD2 broke ground for its new 177 home development (ably assisted by the SLO Chamber), the excitement was tough to contain. “Serra Meadows” (love the logo created by BCA‘s Christine Marin and the MD2team) will offer quintessential SLO-style homes, including craftsman, mission and Spanish styles. The MD2 team pictured left to right: MD2 Randy Tasch, Scott Dinovitz, Shawn Reed, David Alpern and Michael Badner … There’s even more fun ahead at this weekend’s Sunset Magazine Savor the Central Coast event: Aarti Sequeira, host of the Food Network’s “Aarti Paarti,” will be on site at the event Sunday for a noon seminar and a special photo opportunity from 1-3 p.m. Aarti-specifc tickets are available online while supplies last … Also this weekend: Morro Bay’s extravaganza 30th anniversary Harbor Festival. Food, entertainment, fishing demos, craft sales and more … ConocoPhillips’ Nipomo Mesa Refinery exec Kristen Kopp is an accomplished athlete, having snagged honors in women’s basketball and cycling. Turns out there’s talent in the Kopp genes: Kristen, her sister and Dad recently applauded with pride as her brother Kyle, a veteran of two Olympic teams, was inducted into the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame … Galaxy Theatres in Atascadero has done it again: made a one-of-its-kind local arrangement to showcase live-via-satellite feeds of the LA Philharmonic (from LA and Venezuela), the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Phantom of the Opera and the NY Met. Programs begin Oct. 2.

Actor Jon Barclay was featured as the brother in Showtime’s recent “Weeds” finale, notable locally because the veteran actor is the brother-in-law of BCA’er Shabree Wenz. Other credits for the former Abercrombie and Fitch model include CSI: NY, The Bourne Supremacy, and his most prominent role as Second Lieutenant Kretz in Valkyrie with Tom Cruise … $100 buys a chance at a once-in-a lifetime opportunity offered by Cuesta College Athletics: experience an NFL game at historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Win a trip to see the Super Bowl Champions, Green Bay Packers vs. the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night, Nov. 14,  or the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, Dec. 11.  Includes Complimentary airfare for two, three nights lodging, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and more… Wine country casual dining is making its way to the Village of Arroyo Grande.  Rooster Creek Tavern is due to open early December according to the four family owners, Billy Hales, Meygan Hales, Ron & Mercedes Meier, Frank & Debbie Schiro and Daryl & Yvette Cope. The restaurant will anchor the newly constructed building located at Branch and Short in Arroyo Grande … “Start, Run and Grow Your Business” is the name of a new series of entrepreneurship training classes being offered by Mission Community Services. GOOD WORKS

September 29th, 2011

Rabobank’s $10,000 contribution will provide a nice boost to the SLO Symphony’s impressive music education program. Rabo is a longtime friend of the Symphony, having sponsored the “No Ties Allowed!” free dress rehearsals at the PAC since 1997 … Kudos to the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation for its recent Women’s Legacy Luncheon, a stellar sell out, an uplifting afternoon and an impressive fundraiser anchored by MC Sandi Sigurdson with a donation nudge provided by Betsey Nash. Help this most deserving cause with another outing – a screening of Sundance Film Festival winner “Miss Representation,” Wednesday, Oct. 5, 7 p.m. at the Fremont.

BCA BLURB

September 29th, 2011

BCA welcomes two new staffers, both with deep roots on the Central Coast. North County native Josh Farris is a Cal Poly intern majoring in Communication Studies who is sharing his time and talents with BCA this quarter before he graduates in December 2011. Side note: Josh’s college-supporting job at Men’s Wearhouse wins him best-dressed-male-intern honors … Brooke Wighton hails from Arroyo Grande, with stops along the way at Cal Poly and most recently Southern California. The Arizona State University grad cut her marketing teeth at EOS Estate Winery before she went on to a marketing post with an international Cosmetic Design Group headquartered in Los Angeles. The lure of the Central Coast brought her back to town and, happily for us, to BCA. Brooke is a one-woman dynamo who is adeptly juggling many facets of client work.
