SEEN & HEARD

February 23rd, 2012

Honors: to Ermina Karim, who with less than a year under her belt as SLO Chamber President and CEO was honored with the Western Association of Chamber Exec’s prestigious Russell “Rusty” Hammer award, given to an exec who “exemplifies excellence and professionalism and demonstrates potential as a future industry executive.” Ermina was one of a dozen nominees selected from the best of the best in the western United States…And then there’s Ron Yukelson, who you think of as the go-to guy for Sierra Vista, but who in a former life was such a fabulous sports information officer at Cal State Northridge (and their first fulltimer in that position), that he was inducted into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame last weekend. The SoCal native still has sports in his blood. Here’s where we should make a clever wordplay with blood and the hospital, but we’ll let it go with simple kudos to Ron, seen here with a faithful mascot….Central Coast Economic Forecast Coordinator Susan Yamashiro, she who keeps the program humming, is in demand for her event production talents. She was recently the concierge for VIP’s at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, where she made acquaintance with Santa Barbara resident Dr. Larry Martinez, film buff, Cal State Long Beach poli sci whiz, frequent guest on the Dave Congalton show, and, most importantly, son of Cuesta College founding president (and local fave) Dr. Frank Martinez.

Some new faces on the Central Coast: new Chief Nuclear officer for PG&E at Diablo Canyon, Ed Halpin, and general manger of K-LIFE Radio, Brett Gibson. Ed heads here from Texas and Brett has landed from Wisconsin…Ryan Foran, familiar sportscaster at KSBY is now the very-capable communications director for the Lucia Mar School District. He helped coordinate the recent groundbreaking event for New Tech High School…Downstairs neighbors with ties Down Under: Australia-based Imdex Technologies is our new neighbor in the BCA building at 711 Tank Farm Road. Long-time SLO County resident Tim Price is the local general manager for the energy industry instrumentation company that’s actively looking for software engineers…Taylor Mac Staffing owner Heather E. Taylor specializes in training product specialists to speak for the automotive and motorcycle industries. She just completed a project with the Grammy Awards’ major sponsor…With thirty years under its belt, you know the Hotline/SLO Transitions Mental Health Bowl-a-thon is a keeper. The 31st annual starts March 9 and spans three weekends and four locations. Grab some pals and create a team, or what the heck, just write a check to a good cause: events@t-mha.org….Call it the trifecta of dog parks: Sherwood Dog Park is opening in Sherwood Park in Paso Robles, and the community labor of love included the support of North Coast Engineering, who donated services to ensure the park is ADA compliant. The Paso pooch place joins Heilmann Dog Park in Atascadero and Vineyard Dog Park in Templeton as the third of the efforts produced by Parks4Pups, an all volunteer effort. Thank them by supporting the 4th Annual Paso Robles Dog Jog, fundraiser on Saturday, March 24 at 9 am.

BRAGGING RIGHTS

February 23rd, 2012

You know “The Vow” is one of the hottest movies playing right now, but did you know it has a close connection to SLO? Jamey Pappas and his wife Gretchen are directors of Cru (formerly Campus Crusade at Cal Poly). The Vow is based on the true life story of Jamey’s sister, Krickitt, and her husband, Kim Carpenter. Proud bro Jamey shared a photo of the Carpenter family at the movie’s Hollywood premiere with stars Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum…
