Leadership SLO, the highly regarded program produced by the SLO Chamber of Commerce (with masterful exec directing by Sandi Sigurdson) is inviting applicants for its 2011-12 class. Deadline Oct. 3 … The very busy SLO City Council member Andrew Carter just got busier: he is teaching two Cuesta College business courses this semester … There’s always something fun happening on the Central Coast, and this week we offer a couple of North County notables: Friday night it’s Hot August Nights – cruisers and street dance – in Atascadero; Saturday the Olive Festival in Paso Robles … Speaking of cars, Morro Bay’s annual car show got the attention of Car Craft Magazine. The national publication’s September issue features a photo spread from the “Cruisin Morro Bay” car show … Opera San Luis Obispo has named Brian Asher Alhadeff artistic director and conductor and Jacalyn Kreitzer artistic advisor … “Making Money Off Media: The Future of Creativity in the Digital Age” is the name of an intriguing program being presented by SOFTEC on Aug. 24. From castles to ranching; beef to wine: the new “History of Hearst Ranch” display in the Hearst Castle Visitor Center tells a fascinating story. And it has that local touch we love – photo archive search by Hearst employee Mitch Barrett; researched and written by Cambria’s own Susan McDonald with the display designed and built by Susan’s master wood craftsman husband Bob McDonald … Computer whiz company TekTegrity has acquired the IT support business of Integrated Advantage, a Fresno-based computer and network service company. The move into the Central Valley marks TekTegrity’s third acquisition in less than a year … Sonnie Brown, whose name is as familiar as her voice to KCBX listeners, has been named Volunteer Director for Hospice of SLO County. And Sonnie’s no newcomer to Hospice: she has volunteered with the organization since the mid-1990’s … Local moneyman Clay Appleton has joined Cal Coastal Rural Development Corporation. Cal Coastal provides loans and financial services to Central Coast businesses and farms … Give Mission Community Services Corp two hours and they’ll give you an orientation to entrepreneurship. The name is a mouthful, but the competition was very cool. The Ray Scherr Elevator Pitch Competition at Cal Poly attracted plenty of students eager to compete for $750 prizes in exchange for a compelling 90-second pitch that could win the attention of investors and others. All part of the campus Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship … And in a world moving very, very fast – recent BCA intern Kelsey Magnussen reports that she was competing for a paid internship at a big international PR firm. The entry requirement: use Twitter and take no more than 140 words to sell the team on yourself.  No news yet on outcome … Fab photog Duane Hall’s “Faces of the Harvest “black and white gallery is on the road to a larger audience. The work will be showcased next week at the opening reception of the 20th Annual Western Migrant Stream Forum, being held in Oakland  … Mission Community Services Corp (MCSC) is making 2011 the year for entrepreneurship training. Tuesday, Feb. 15 is the kickoff of a 14-week program designed to help start up or growing businesses succeed. E-mail info@mcscorp.org and ask about the program.

Tim Seidel - a "Face of the Industry " on camera

Tim Seidel is the manager of the ConocoPhillips’ Refinery on the Nipomo Mesa and a young exec clearly on the rise. His leadership and his team’s continued record-breaking safety performance put the refinery in a prestigious group of exemplary operations nationwide. Tim was picked to be the focus of a “Faces of the Industry” video produced by the American Petroleum Institute. One of only a very few honorees … Hearst Castle’s marketing to new generations and special audiences tells you our local treasure is about more than the past. Spectacular holiday decoration, night tours with costumed docents, self-guided tours – all very forward thinking. And if you’ve stayed away because of stairs and too much walking, take a look at the “physically challenged” tour. Golf carts and front-door drop offs make everything a breeze. Special shout out to Castle PR chief Dan Eller and fab tour guide Julie Blow for a recent first person, top-notch experience … Next generation talent: Cuesta student Drew Kirsch donated hours of time to shoot and edit videos for the recent Central Coast Economic Forecast. Check out his work. Thanks, Drew. We suspect a bright future awaits … Quick bit with big implications: Sierra Vista has gone green and is now live with its electronic documentation system. No more paper … BCA’s own Dave Cox turned the tables at a recent CEO Roundtable, moving from member to guest speaker to share his expertise in branding.
