The first ever Central Coast Cancer Challenge, presented by Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, is a multi-sport event taking place at Laguna Lake Park Sept. 18 and benefiting the Wellness Center. Too much to tell here – 5k and 10k run/walk, 50k/100k cycling, kids run and bike rodeo; wellness expo and Damon Castillo Band – this event has it all … It’s a busy time for the Collaboration team. Tonight at 5:30, Collaboration hosts a “State of Small Business in SLO” mixer at the Crooked Kilt at 1865 Monterey. Free food and intriguing conversation; and Friday, Sept. 10 at noon their Business Education lunch features Andre, Morris & Buttery principal (and all around impressive) Beth Marino discussing buy-sell agreements. Reservations required … Corri Perry, manager of Fence Factory Rentals Atascadero, is the newly elected president of the SLO County Builders Exchange, joined by VP Patrick Kimbell (Kimbell-Brown Construction of Los Osos); secretary Mike Bray (Michael Bray Construction of Paso Robles) and treasurer Steve Stillman (Stillman Enterprises of Arroyo Grande). And welcome to Lindsay Newcomb, Fresno transplant and new marketing director for Limberg Lasik Institute. You could say she set her sights on the Central Coast.

LOCAL BEAT

We talked about Project Surf Camp in our last FYI, and today we can report the fabulous news that the group was named on the NBC Today Show as one of only three runners up in “Pepsi Refresh Project.” Top winner of a $100,000 grant was the Gulf Bay Area Food Bank. But here’s the best part: the runners up got more than just kudos – each of the three received a surprise grant of $50,000, enough to keep the local surf project in the water and serving 500 campers for two more seasons. Special kudos to Nate Ditmore of Morro Bay Surf Company and his wife, Jolie (Central Coast Pathology), dedicated Surf Camp volunteers … Even if you don’t fully understand what they do, you have to be impressed by Digital West Network’s relentless push for excellence. Tim Williams’ internet hosting company has made a huge upgrade to its internet backbone and transit system, now offering 100 times more volume and speed than was previously available.

Lee Johnson is a senior exec at Collaboration in San Luis Obispo, and his wife Christine also knows a thing or two about bringing people and plans together. Christine was a member of the all-volunteer Morro Bay 4th event that worked with local bike clubs to sponsor a first-ever bike parade, hoping for 100 participants. Check out the picture and note the fun of more than 350 patriotic cyclists wheeling their way around town. Congratulations … When Jerry Bunin, longtime pal, familiar face and strong voice for the Homebuilders Association asks for a line in FYI, it’s tough to say no, especially when the item is for Jerry’s other life as a mover and shaker in the Arroyo Grande Dog Park. How do you resist a first ever “Puttin’ on the Dog Fair” coming up on Aug. 21 in Arroyo Grande? With a BBQ, vendors, dog demos and come-on-you-have-to-love-it “Mutt-Strut Parade,” well heck, let’s show the dog lovers a little support.

FYI Special Edition
June 3rd, 2010
FYI Readers:
We love giving you FYI tidbits and updates twice a month. But today we’re turning the tables and instead, we’re asking you to give – to Hunger Awareness Day. Come on, keep reading: we’re not asking much.
Today’s the day. Please just take one moment right now and pass the hat in your office, go online to www.slofoodbank.org with a credit card contribution, or easier yet – text “feedus” to 20222 and your cell phone account will be charged $10. We thank the many people who have already stepped up, and we hope you’ll join the list.
There are 20 different donation sites throughout the county (check the Food Bank website). SLO Headquarters is in the First Bank parking lot at Higuera and Osos Streets, where on-air stars Amy and Kahuna, our dedicated pals from Coast 101.3, are broadcasting live for twelve hours straight beginning at 6 a.m. Come down, bring your cash, say hi and have some fun. The SLO booth is open through Farmer’s Market and heck, even into Bike Night.
One dollar, one day. Today.

SEEN & HEARD

Even if you’re not one of the minions of Harley-lovin locals, you can appreciate Molly Kight, aka “Triker Chick,” whose articles on all things motorcycle are popping up in magazines and blogs. The engaging Molly attracted the attention of another Harley devotee, radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger, on Dr. Laura’s recent ride through Arroyo Grande. Sorry about the closed-eye photo, Molly, but we couldn’t’ resist … When Hunger Awareness Day 2010 rolls out on June 3, it will feature an all new “Text to Give” option, thanks to savvy Food Bank staffer JoLin Rosa. Text “FEEDUS” to 20222 – it’s live now … Smokin’ success follows hard work for Nina and Ray Cattaneo of Ray’s Own Brand. Their sausage and jerky, longtime local faves, are now available in California grocery stores including Mollie Stone’s, Raley’s, Ralphs and Albertsons from Costa Mesa to San Francisco and throughout the Central Valley. Find out more at www.raysownbrand.com … Ours is a small town with big city food, thanks to Robin Covey whose menu at Chow in Downtown SLO features intriguing new items including Banh Mi, a French-Vietnamese ciabatta sandwich, Korean beef burgers and fish “tacos” prepared in a seaweed wrapper. Even better: lunch specials starting at just $8 … Sustenance Studio offers a fun way to boost employee or other group morale using shared cooking experiences. Consider it a cooking party that produces fab food, a painless lesson in teamwork and always a laugh or two: 234-1691 … And a big “welcome back” to local chef and fab restaurateur Maegen Loering, who has opened the Neon Carrot on South Higuera in SLO.

Fighting juvenile diabetes is a family affair for Sierra Vista COO Joe DeSchryver and wife Laurie. Son Kyle’s diagnosis led Laurie to leadership positions with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and kids Kyle and Callie onto the red carpet at a recent JDRF event in LA. The pint-sized stars’ turn included walking former major league baseball star Todd Zeile onto stage. Callie was thrilled when “Hannah Montana’s daddy” – that would be Billy Ray Cyrus – admired her pink cowboy boots.

BCA BLURB
May 6th, 2010
One month to go to SLO County Hunger Awareness Day on June 3. It’s one of BCA’s best-loved causes. We knock ourselves out to help raise “one dollar one day” and boy, we can use your help. Pass the hat, send an e-mail, text to donate, write a check – we’ve got lots of ideas for how you can make it happen. Can you join us? E-mail mcox@barnettcox.com … We’ve got a knack for finding talent: Spring quarter BCA writing intern and Cal Poly student Alisha Axsom wrote a terrific piece for the Mustang Daily a year ago about a dynamic student leader in charge of the University Union Art Gallery: none other than Kristin Savage, another BCA intern and now a prized employee … Two great pieces of happy news: 80th birthday greetings to Clifford Chapman, one of the true jewels of the Central Coast. And a warm welcome to Baby Lola Ciufo, daughter of Nick and Kacey Ciufo. The then-Kacey Ampi worked for BCA and has since expanded her life to include a husband, a teaching credential and motherhood (in that order).
