GOOD WORKS

August 4th, 2011

Mark your calendar for August 10 and plan that day to take two seconds to help the Food Bank Coalition of SLO County win one of 100 cars Toyota is giving away to non profits. This is a pure numbers game – let’s show Toyota that a small area can have a big voice when it comes to one of our own. Simply go to www.Facebook.com/toyota, click on the “100 Cars for Good” and vote for the Food Bank. Spread the word and this link … You gotta love this kind of full circle giving: Ian McPhee supported the Senior Nutrition Program’s “Night of a Million Meals” with the generous donation of two five course, wine-included dinners for ten. Mike & Debi Lemos, owners of Lemos Feed and Pet Supply, made the winning bid on one of the packages. The Lemos’ turned tables (literally), and gifted the dinner to exec director Elias Nimeh to be used to treat ten of his seniors to a most memorable meal. It was some party … Lee Ferrero has joined a prestigious advisory group that offers a first hand perspective to the Alzheimer’s Association.  Lee joined other members of the by-invitation-only group recently at the Association’s headquarters in Chicago to discuss upcoming activities that include testifying before the Social Security Commission and providing insights to a number of health and science-related House and Senate subcommittees.

SEEN & HEARD

July 7th, 2011

The SF Travel Association is literally rolling through town the next couple of days. Keep your eyes out for a motorized trolley carrying a group headed to Morro Bay, SLO Farmers’ Market and on to Pismo Beach. The VCB is helping make it happen … What do you get when you combine 35 gallons of ice cream and 100 pans of brownies? If you’re the famous Doc Burnstein’s in Arroyo Grande, the answer is a 300-pound ice cream sandwich with sights set on scooping the title “World’s Biggest” at the Arroyo Grande Centennial Celebration Block Party this Sunday. 1,600+ devotees can sample history and support Boy Scout Troop 413 starting at 4:30 that afternoon … And by the way, ConocoPhillips is hosting the celebration concert that afternoon … Morro Bay stepped up its 4th of July festivities with a Sunday Skateboard race that saw the world record for a one mile course get smashed to smithereens with a time of 3:43 (old time was 4:03). And on Monday, the fun continued with a second annual bike parade that had hundreds of pedalers including kids, dogs, adults and more than a few Uncle Sams. Kudos to all the communities who gave us holiday celebrations … Apropos of nothing but we think it’s interesting: this year July has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays – an alignment that happens once every 823 years.
