Eight companies with big dreams and solid business plans will make a case for investor funding at an inaugural event produced by SLO Seed Ventures and Cal Poly’s Innovation Quest. The hopefuls present Friday, July 30, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Cal Poly’s Orfalea College of Business … Drowning in e-mails? Grab a Mission Community Services Corporation life vest on Aug. 6, when ORGANIZE coach Erin Hoffman offers a brown bag session on managing that pesky inbox. RSVP to info@mcscorp.org (hmmm…they must have e-mail under control) or by phone to 595-1357 … Grade Potential Tutoring, a tutoring service founded by then-Cal Poly student (and now owner) Dave Serwirtz, knows something about making the grade. The SLO and Santa Barbara offices of Grade Potential were joined last week by a third location, this one in San Diego. We give Dave an A for ambition and drive.

GOOD WORKS

July 16th, 2010

Lee Johnson is a senior exec at Collaboration in San Luis Obispo, and his wife Christine also knows a thing or two about bringing people and plans together. Christine was a member of the all-volunteer Morro Bay 4th event that worked with local bike clubs to sponsor a first-ever bike parade, hoping for 100 participants. Check out the picture and note the fun of more than 350 patriotic cyclists wheeling their way around town. Congratulations … When Jerry Bunin, longtime pal, familiar face and strong voice for the Homebuilders Association asks for a line in FYI, it’s tough to say no, especially when the item is for Jerry’s other life as a mover and shaker in the Arroyo Grande Dog Park. How do you resist a first ever “Puttin’ on the Dog Fair” coming up on Aug. 21 in Arroyo Grande? With a BBQ, vendors, dog demos and come-on-you-have-to-love-it “Mutt-Strut Parade,” well heck, let’s show the dog lovers a little support.

We love giving you FYI tidbits and updates twice a month. But today we’re turning the tables and instead, we’re asking you to give – to Hunger Awareness Day. Come on, keep reading:  we’re not asking much.

Today’s the day. Please just take one moment right now and pass the hat in your office, go online to www.slofoodbank.org with a credit card contribution, or easier yet – text “feedus” to 20222 and your cell phone account will be charged $10.  We thank the many people who have already stepped up, and we hope you’ll join the list.

There are 20 different donation sites throughout the county (check the Food Bank website). SEEN & HEARD

April 22nd, 2010

With today being Earth Day, it seems only right to mention an especially enviro-friendly product produced by Atascadero-based Impact Absorbents, Inc. that qualifies as simply brilliant – a paint solidifier. Paint can’t be taken to the landfill and haz mat disposal days aren’t always scheduled when you need them. The folks at Impact Absorbents have “Xsorb Rock Solid Paint Solidifier,” that turns unwanted paint into a disposable solid – an environmentally friendly option for disposing of latex and acrylic paints, even acceptable in landfills. You simply add the product to paint and shake or stir. The paint thickens into a disposable solid within minutes. How’s that for a top notch green idea right here at home? … Tickets are on the move for the UCSB Economic Forecast Project Mid Year Update. Wednesday morning, June 2. Paso Robles Event Center, and why not? Feisty presenters. Hot topics. And for attendees south of the grade, a free ride on the PG&E sponsored “Espresso Express” bus. Get over the hill, into the show and home before lunch. Space limited. Reserve a seat by calling the Paso or Atascadero chambers … There’s still time – State and Federal tax credits make for some fabulous opportunities for local home buyers. April 30 is the magic date for contracts, with up to $18,000 in tax credits and other incentives available. BCA clients’ Midland Pacific Homes and Trilogy Central Coast can tell you more.
