SEEN & HEARD

March 11th, 2011

Photog phenom Chris Leschinsky’s shot of winemaker Justin Smith of Saxum scored the cover of this month’s Wine Spectator magazine. And that’s not all – he has more photos inside the magazine. Check it out before all the news stand copies disappear … Some school assignments are just better than others. Researchers from Cal Poly’s Center for Coastal Marine Science are spending most of this month in the Western Equatorial Pacific studying ocean currents and how they interact with coral reef islands … Peek in the window of the former Parable store on Marsh Street and see something new for SLO. 50 computers, all with large high-res monitors. A call center? Library study carrels? Nope, it’s the latest rage – Good Game, a place where friends gather to play video games … Bullseye: If your travels don’t include Los Osos Valley Road near Costco in SLO, then you might not have seen the banner announcing Target’s July 24 Grand Opening … Former SLO Parks and Rec director Betsy Kiser is the new owner of a specially crafted bracelet (Kevin Main Jewelry) raffled off by FPAC in celebration of its 25th anniversary. Community response to the contest will enable 1,000 local students to attend live performances at the PAC.

SEEN & HEARD

January 27th, 2011

The Target store in SLO is shaping up quickly with the help of pour-on-site tilt up wall construction. Voila, a building emerges! And future next door neighbor Mac Superstore has installed webcams on its project site that shares new images of the moving-quickly ahead project, updated every two minutes … Gotta give a shout out to the SLO Chamber for serving up another terrific Annual Dinner on January 22. This one had something new: the announcement that longtime Chamber president and CEO Dave Garth will retire later this year. Mighty big shoes to fill…more on that to come. Meanwhile, kudos to incoming chair Michael Gunther of Collaboration LLC and his terrific board; “great job” thanks to outgoing chair John Ewan of Pacific Energy Company and super kudos to organizer extraordinaire Lindsey Miller. BCA’s Dave and Maggie Cox had the honor of serving as MC’s, an assignment made more fun by the good sportsmanship of Jeanne Potter, Gil Stork, Beth Marino, Anita Robinson, Ken Hampian and Dave Romero along with Gunther, Garth and Ewan who helped with a little free-license photo display. The evening was topped off by the announcement of Greg Hind as Citizen of the Year. (Pictured left to right in the lineup above: County Supervisor Bruce Gibson, SLO Chamber CEO Dave Garth, Award Sponsor Bill Thoma of Thoma Electric, Senator Sam Blakeslee, Citizen of the Year Greg Hind and Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian) … More fun – by now the famous “Oprah Showcases SLO” episode has aired, but we offer a residual bite of fame: a picture of some of our SLO-cal folks who helped spread the news of our happy town. Renoda Campbell-Moza, Michael Gunther and Beth Marino were interviewed at Novo by Jenny McCarthy (second from right) … It’s been quite a 25-year run for the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center, and local jeweler Kevin Main is helping herald the group’s 25th anniversary with a custom-designed piece capturing the PAC’s logo studded with diamonds. The piece is being raffled: check it out . Forgive us, but we just have to mention that BCA team proudly designed the PAC’s distinctive logo all those years ago and still proudly works with both PAC and FPAC. We love long-term relationships.

BCA BLURB

July 1st, 2010

A last word, well, make it two, on Hunger Awareness Day 2010: Thank You. Volunteers, donors, publicity partners – you all helped make for a great fundraising day. We know how tight money still is and we saw it in a tally that was down significantly from last year. If you can still help with even a dollar, please do. You can text FEEDUS to 20222 for a $10 donation, donate online, by phone or in the mail.

BCA BLURB

Volunteer Sharon Young shows Lindsay Cox how to work that new college degree.

It’s that time of year, and BCA recognizes standout grads and an upcoming college senior: BCA interns Marie Christoffersen and Alisha Axsom and crackerjack Graphic Designer Kristin Savage. We knew we’d have to say goodbye to our interns, but we’ve had to add Kristin to that list, as she and her fiancé, Mike McCarty move to the Bay Area. Mike, a Cal Poly engineering grad student has received a prestigious job with PG&E, and Kristin, darn it, has skills that transfer anywhere … And finally, what kind of family-owned business would we be if we didn’t acknowledge our own Lindsay Cox, who graduated with a communications degree from Chico State on a Sunday – and cut short her after-grad vacation time to man the booth at Hunger Awareness Day. Congratulations!
