New research portrays the UK as a smartphone-addicted country. In the study, 23% of adults and 34% of teens have used their smartphones during mealtimes, and 23% of teenagers claim to watch less TV and 15% admit they read fewer books as a result of their smartphone use. We imagine the U.S. not being far behind. What did researchers find? Check these stats out. (And if you see yourself in them, don’t fret. Ours are sitting on our desks too.)

BCA loves having a little fun with social media. (Didn’t know that already? Check out our Facebook page. Like it while you’re there.) And BCA loves having a little fun in the community too. The resulting collision of fun? Caboodle. The social media contest was a fun mix of Facebook, Foursquare and traditional outreach. While we enjoyed watching the participation and our partners got some exposure in the community, we had a gaggle of winners too! Our top winner, Mike McCarty of SLO, won a brand-spanking-new iPad from MacSuperstore. Other big thanks: Windows on the Water, Doc Burnstein’s, Pomar Junction, Idler’s, Galaxy Theatres, the Morro Bay Natural History Museum and Nautical Bean.

Newspaper publisher, community leader, Cal Poly VP are all nice on his resume, but Chip Visci’s recent career first may trump them all: a hole in one on a 155-yard par 3 at San Luis Obispo Country Club on Memorial Day. It was one bounce and into hole No. 8, a historic feat witnessed by the very credible Bob Wacker … Well-known wealth manager Jeff Eckles has taken on a new venture. Jeff is the proud owner of the Morro Bay House of Jerky, located on the Embarcadero near Otter Rock Café. Exotics include buffalo, wild boar and alligator jerky, and a host of local products. And when you’re in Morro Bay, check out the new street banners along the waterfront, a project headed up by Morro Bay businessman Stan Trapp … Fun photo exhibit at Compact Gallery Studio, 1166 Higuera.  Keith Holbrook’s work focuses on signs and slogans in contemporary culture … Wondering what’s going into the space next to McCarthy Wholesale on Lower Higuera in SLO? So were we, so we checked it out and learned the building is being remodeled for a shooting range … Home-grow and community focused Tolosa Press continues to expand its coverage and circulation. Cambria is now on the receiving end of the Bay News distribution route. Nice timing with summer tourists, business upticks and plenty of news to report … A gentleman (and his wife and daughter) of Verona: Superior Court Judge Marty Tangeman, his wife Carol and daughter Marissa are heading to Verona in August for a fabulous one-year gig living under the Italian sun. His Honor has taken an unpaid sabbatical from the bench and will be teaching Comparative Law at a Verona University. Arrivederci!
