GOOD WORKS

February 10th, 2011

Well-earned hats off to amazing volunteer Sandy Dunn, chosen to receive the SLO Symphony’s “Distinguished Volunteer and Music Education Advocate” honor. She’s done too much to list it here. Sandy will receive the award at the symphony Ball on Feb. 26. She and husband John Dunn, former CAO for City of SLO, are splitting their time between a home here and one in Rohnert Park in the North Bay Area. John’s consulting skills are helping that city emerge from some very deep doldrums … Volunteers make things happen on the Central Coast, and chambers of commerce are where much of the great business action originates. A nod of recognition to the newly installed chair people of local chambers, busy people who have agreed to be even busier for the next year: Atascadero: Chuck BraunState Farm Insurance; Paso Robles: Debra AlbertKennedy Club Fitness; SLO: Michael GuntherCollaboration Business Consulting; Morro Bay: John WeissRadio Shack Coast Electronics; Cambria: Mel McCollochMcColloch Consulting; Arroyo Grande: Terence ConcannonMission Inn /soon to be Hilton Garden Inn; Pismo Beach: Roger WhightmanSandcastle Inn.

GOOD WORKS

October 7th, 2010

When 600 numbered golf balls were dumped from a helicopter at the recent Santa Maria Valley YMCA golf tournament, four of them landed in the hole-in-one. Local Andre, Morris & Buttery attorney Kevin Morris found his number was up – in a good way – his was one of the lucky four that scored a $5,000 winner’s pot. Kevin graciously donated the funds back to the Y’s scholarship fund … The fabulous work of Transitions Mental Health will get a boost at the third annual Harvest Festival slated for noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. Enjoy art, music, flowers and produce – all free – at the Growing Grounds Farm at 820 West Foster Road in Santa Maria. BBQ tickets available for purchase at www.t-mha.org … Another reorganization that offers amazing services to the community: the Wellness Community of the California Central Coast. This group supports cancer patients and families and is right there to help when the “what do I do now?” fear sets in. Lots going on with the Wellness Community: Lee National Denim Day Oct. 8; “I Am Thinking Pink” fashion show sponsored by Noreen Martin on Oct. 14; golf tournament on Oct. 16…so many ways to help. Learn more.

SEEN & HEARD

August 26th, 2010

The No on Measure H group is working feverishly to make sure 20 years of planning and future sports fields aren’t done in by a crazy ballot initiative. No on H Campaign leaders John Spatafore, Stacey White and Hillary Trout are a trio that inspires followers, and they’ve amassed an impressive list of supporters. Check it out and sign up to help at NoOnMeasureH.com … The Central Coast Economic Forecast group is well underway to producing a bang-up event November 5th. Save the date and earmark some dollars to help sponsor the program that keeps solid economic data coming our way. Speaking of economic data – the City of SLO offers a quarterly sales tax report that is full of info. And while the most recent report (first quarter 2010) showed a .5 percent decline, it was the lowest decrease in several years. We’re hoping that means things will continue to improve.

BRAGGING RIGHTS

October 22nd, 2009

Kudos coming in threes: The recent Scarecrow Contest/Harvest Festival produced by the Cambria Historical Society (and led by BCA pal Susan McDonald) attracted 1,000 happy attendees. And speaking of Cambria, the charming community was named “one of America’s prettiest towns” by Forbes Traveler. SLO County shared this month’s media spotlight with a multi-page article in SkyWest magazine … Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center has been selected for the 2009 “Best of San Luis Obispo Award” in the Hospitals Category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA) … Major congratulations to BCA’er Teri Conklin, who successfully completed the Nike Women’s Half Marathon benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in San Francisco on Sunday. Teri, a dedicated local volunteer for the American Cancer Society, walked 13.1 miles to further the fight against cancer.
